Final count of salmon at Veazie best since 1992

For the past several months, avid anglers and conservationists have been paying close attention to the Penobscot River, where adult Atlantic salmon returned in numbers not seen in years.

After early May’s freshet finally flowed into the ocean, the fish trap at the Veazie Dam was activated. Staffers from the Maine Department of Marine Resources’ Bureau of Sea-Run Fisheries and Habitat began monitoring the trap, taking several hundred salmon to Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in Orland and moving others upriver.

Along the banks of the Penobscot (and via the Internet in living rooms and offices across the state) folks counted along as the trap total rose … and rose … and rose.

Today, I’m happy to be able to report the final tally. Oliver Cox of the DMR’s Bureau of Sea-Run Fisheries and Habitat checked in late last week with his final report of the year.

2008 favorite family photos

We have had a great year as a family getting out and fishing. I tried to get the boys out at least once a week. Here are some high lights from the past year.

Time to put the boat away

Monday, November 24th, 2008

I wanted to get the boat in the water one last time,so I called a couple buddies and they were in for one last trip in the boat for 2008. The morning started out cold and stayed cold, only getting into the mid 20s and it was breezy but that didn’t stop the fish from biting. We had some good laughs and ended November on a high note.

Just when I think I am done

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Over the past few weeks I have said,”O.K. this is it,last time out” but I get into a ton of fish and think just one more time out. Well today was suppose to be my last day with the drift boat and it was going away for the winter but after all the fish Alan and I got into today, I think him and I might just go just one more time. Almost all fish came to hand with a olive woolly bugger but I was able to fool a few with a McKay Special. We had a breeze all day and even saw some spitting of snow,it won’t be long.

The last few weeks

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I find the fall fishing to be my favorite and sometimes the colder it gets the better. It brings on a whole new set of challenges. Even though most of the places hold stock fish, the places are beautiful and are a lot of fun with a 4 weight rod. They are also great places to spend time with friends. These are some pictures form the last few weeks.
