Early season small mouth

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I got a call a couple of weeks ago from Jess, wanting me to guide him from small mouth. I told him it was going to suck, high water and cold but he insisted. So we decided on a half day. The river was running 47,000 cfs, the wind was blowing the hardest I have seen it and the water temp was 48 degrees.

I hit several spot but we only found them in one , he landed several 15 inchers, a 17, 18 1/2 and the biggest one I have had a client bring to hand,a 21 incher!

Crappie on the Fly

Monday, April 27th, 2009

This is the earliest we have gone after crappie, we usually wait until May but with the warm days and low water we gave it a shot. We only found them in one spot and they were stacked up. Tait count 20 fish landed with a couple of sunfish and one white perch in the mix. Jax and I did just as well.

After fishing for crappie we headed to a brook, hoping to get some suckers on the fly but only managed a few chubs but the suckers were there, they would roll in the fast water. We ended up rescuing a eel that was hooked on a hook and mono line in the river.

State defends salmon season

Friday, April 17th, 2009

HALLOWELL, Maine — State officials in charge of restoring Atlantic salmon to Maine’s rivers said Thursday they plan to allow angling for the sport fish on the Penobscot this May despite strong objections from federal agencies.

Federal officials are expected to issue a decision as early as the end of this month on whether to list salmon in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers as “endangered” species. The designation would likely take effect 30 days after the announcement. read more…..

THey begged me to take them but with the water still to cold for warm water fish and a little high, I tried to talk them out of it but then they offered me two dollars. “We will give you two dollars if you take us, I promise”, how can you say no to that. No fish but a great day to be out. Now with streams and ponds warming up and lowering, I will get them on some fish soon.

Ice is out at local lakes, but not for West Grand

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

By John Holyoke

As April progresses and area brooks begin flowing more freely, many anglers can’t help but find excuses to take scenic drives through the countryside.

They’re not looking for animals, no matter what they tell you. They’re not going fishing, either.

If they’re like me, they’re looking for ice … or, more precisely, the lack of ice on their favorite fishing lake.
Trolling a productive lake just after ice out (and freezing yourself senseless in the process) is a springtime tradition here in Maine, right up there with smelt fries and fiddlehead feeds.

And until your lake is ice-free, spring simply hasn’t officially arrived.

On Monday afternoon I hopped in the truck and drove a few miles, hoping to find open water.

In a bit, I’ll tell you the good news.read more

Pike on the fly

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I have yet to have a good experience pike fishing, to cold, to windy and no fish. Yes, I know it isn’t about catching fish but you know deep down it is all about catching fish. I have decided April is not the month for pike,no matter what you read, May is it. The water is warmer, the sun shines brighter and the fish are very aggressive. Here are photos from Mondays pike outing. It was cold and extremely windy and no fish caught but I great day fishing new water and hanging with a good friend.

Blue Skies

Monday, April 6th, 2009

We finally had blues skies and warmer weather, I couldn’t resist. With most of the state blown out, I didn’t have very high expectations. I arrived later than I wanted and was force to fish where I normally wouldn’t but it paid off. I fished a 150 grain line with streamers and was able to land three nice salmon and had a few fallows. Right before I left there was a midge hatch and a few rising fish.

First outing of 2009

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

My boys begged me to take them fishing today. I knew the water was high and muddy looking but we gave it a try. We found a new brook to try later this month when the water level comes down and it clears. It was good to get out and they had a blast.

A fishing village greets the new season

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

Bernard “Bun” Ward can’t remember exactly when he first discovered this tiny village nestled in the Down East woods.

“It’s been a while,” the Columbia Falls fly fisherman said Wednesday as he stood in a parking lot overlooking the famed Dam Pool of Grand Lake Stream. “I guess the first time I was down here was 45 years ago. In fact, Ted Williams was around then.”

Yes, Ted Williams used to come here. So did sportscaster Curt Gowdy, whose favorite fishing spot, a little outcropping overlooking a particularly productive piece of water, now bears his name.

Assorted other TV personalities visited as well. Many came to fish for smallmouth bass. Many others made the trek to rural eastern Maine hoping to tangle with a hard-fighting landlocked salmon.    Read more……
