As of yesterday the count was 1,444 salmon and water temps were 20 C (68 F). In the past week, we have seen a wide range in daily counts from a low of 7 to a high of 94, yesterday. Last year our biggest single day was 89 new salmon on June 11th followed by 88 on June 23. You have to go back to 2003 to find a higher daily count (98). The all time daily high for Veazie was 252 on June 28, 1990. Let hope the peak of the run is still to come

Trout and Salmon

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I took out Mike from All Points Insurance, located right here in Brewer. It was rainy and cloudy, the hatches were scarce but we did manage many hook ups but a lot less to the boat. Of course all the bigger fish were long line releases. We did get in a nice 13 inch brook trout. I bet we boated close to 20 fish.

High water

Monday, June 29th, 2009

With all this rain, the Penobscot River has been running high and last Thursday, Friday and Saturday I wasto be  guiding on it. The first two days I end up fishing a pond and they got a lot of smaller bass but did get in to some real pigs on poppers. Bob hooked one that was over 20 inches but the fish won and landed several over 17 inches and a 19.

On the last day we were able to get back on the river and we had a great day, landing over 40 on poppers and missing as many,so we had action all day. The biggest fish was Larry with a 19 1/4 inch small mouth, that is a big river fish! It was his biggest to date.

Annual fishing trip

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Since my boys were three, I have taken them on a annual fishing trip. Every year is some place different. We really never care what we catch, so our target fish is any thing that swims. This was my nephews first fishing trip with us and first time he really did any fly fishing. He just graduated 8th grade,so I gave him a nice starter rod and real. He broke it in pretty fast.

Another raining day

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

I guided Dean and Dave for the first time and this was their first time fishing the Penobscot River. They fished with flies all day and got into some nice fish, several over 17 inches and many 15 inch fish. We had a lot of laughs and got soaked.

Penobscot River Atlantic Salmon count

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Today we broke the 1,000 mark with 1,051 new salmon at the Veazie trap. The run is just off last year’s pace and looking strong. The grilse have begun to show up in small numbers. We have seen 11 grilse this year, last year we had trapped 147 by this date. Water temps have been hovering around 20 C ( 68 F). Oliver Cox, Fishery Biologist
