Saturday, July 25th, 2009Latest Atlantic Salmon count
Tuesday, July 21st, 2009The trap count is now 1,894. The run has slowed down this past week. We have been seeing 1 - 6 salmon per day over the last five days. Water temperatures were holding around 20 C (68 F) last week, but has been climbing. This afternoon’s water temperature was 22.4 C (72.5 F). Flows at West Enfield have been around 10,000 cfs for the past four days. About 3,000 cfs above the long-term median.
I have a included bonus figure this week, at no additional charge, that show the daily salmon counts for 2009 along with water temperature (measure each morning) and estimated flows at Veazie.
As of July 5th, the grilse (1 sea-winter) were 5% of the run compared to 30% last year. I will update those numbers in August once the data has been entered. Over the last week, the grilse have been about 30% of our catch.
Look for the next update in a couple of weeks.

Jorge and Jorge
Tuesday, July 21st, 2009This was their first time fishing for small mouth bass. They were up to escape the heat of Florida and do a little fishing, I think they managed both. Young Jorge told me this was the most fish he has ever caught, he did a great job hooking and landing many fish. He was able to get a couple 17 inch bass and two 17 1/4 and many in the 16 inch range.

Penobscot river-watchers may have taken a second glance at the water Thursday, as an odd-looking craft plied the waterway. A long boom jutted out in front of the flat-bottomed boat, and two wader-clad men stood on a makeshift bow platform, long-handled dip nets at the ready.
No need to worry, river-watchers. read more………
Brian the sunfish king
Monday, July 20th, 2009Carl hired me to guide him and his brother, for Brian’s birthday. They fly fished the whole time even though Brian brought the spinning rod. They had action all day long and there was some ribbing when fish were missed. Brian seemed have some sunfish attractant on his fly because he boated probably the most I have ever got on the river(naming him the sunfish king) but they are a powerful little fish.
It was fun for me to take these two brother out and hope my two boys will have this relationship when they get older and still fish together.
