In Upper Andro 2-Fly Contest Bethel, Me…..Tyler Cote of Monmouth was the first place winner in the Third Annual Upper Andro Two Fly Contest held Saturday, September 19th on the Upper Androscoggin River between New Hampshire and Rumford. Tyler tied for first place in the biggest fish category with Brad Jerome of Newry. Both anglers caught a 14” rainbow trout. There was a tie for second place between Kevin McKay of Brewer, Maine and Charlie Lowe of Twin Mountain, NH, with 13 ½” rainbows. The largest catch was also won by Cote with 12 fish, ten rainbows, a brown and brook trout. Second place went to Overbey with a catch of 9 rainbows and third place to Lowe with 4 rainbows, a brook and brown trout.
The Rocky Freda Turtle Water Team Trophy was presented to the Patagonia/Wild River Angler team who caught 21 fish.
Thirteen teams entered the competition. Each team made up of two anglers and a drift boat oarsman, fished with the use of only two flies from 6 am to 2 pm. All fish were caught, recorded and released. Along with the trophies, merchandise prizes from Orvis, L.L. Bean, Kittery Trading Post and Patagonia were presented to the winners. Three anglers who were unable to catch any fish received a new set of flies from Selene Dumaine of Merrymeeting Fly Shop in Brunswick.
The annual event is a fundraiser for the Upper Andro Anglers Alliance. The non-profit group, based in Bethel, is dedicated to conserving, protecting, restoring and promoting the natural resources relating to the Upper Androscoggin River, its tributaries, watershed and environs.

Adro Two Fly

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Thanks to Peter of www.strikinggoldjewelers.com for sponsoring my boat in the Andro Two fly contest( http://upperandro.com/magazine/) Our team was Peter Farnsworth, Kevin McKay and Tom Gagnon (rowing). Since this was our first time fishing this river we relied on Tom for his knowledge of the river and we ended up fishing his very well tied flies. We landed seven fish and tied for second place for the largest fish,a 13 1/2 inch rainbow.

Fall fishing in Maine

Monday, September 14th, 2009

I did a quick run to the river for trout and salmon. I hooked a couple of nymphs but kept seeing rises, so I put on a big stone dry and a trailer and the fish attacked the big meal. I was fishing my sons Scott A3 8 foot 4 wght and it was a blast to fish.

Penobscot River Atlantic Salmon count

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Photobucket

As of yesterday, 1,945 salmon have been collected from the adult trap at Veazie. Since my last update, the Penobscot Salmon run has slowed to a crawl. For 19 days, from Aug 12 – 30, no salmon were trapped. During that time, water temperatures averaged 75.4 F and topped out near 80 F. Typical water temperatures for that time of year would be 72.3 F. Over the last 10 days, water temperatures have been seasonal for this time of year (67.5 F). Flows continue to remain slightly above normal based on USGS gage data (USGS 01034500 Penobscot River at West Enfield, Maine).
