This story begins in 1949. Maybe. Some folks say it begins in 1959. What’s certain is this: Maine’s anglers were hoodwinked.

“What happened is the original, supposed record [white perch], which was held by a Mrs. [Earl] Small from Waterville, back in I think ’49, was really misidentified,” Bourque said.

That’s right. Misidentified. the real story, read more…..

Raining Day fishing

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Bill Blake was up from Texas and he wanted to treat his future brother in-law to some fishing, so he called me on a favor. We had  a great time, we landed 23 in three hours, mostly on flies. I gave Rob some casting lessons and he was able to catch his first fish on a fly. It was by far the coldest, wet ride back to the boat launch I have ever had.

On a good day of fishing (or a bad one, for that matter), anglers put daily problems aside, lose track of time, and immerse themselves in the natural world around them.

The folks that run Project Healing Waters understand that. And the fly fishing-based outreach program for veterans is designed to offer recreational outlets — fly-tying, rod-building and fishing — that build or renew those connections to the natural world.

Project Healing Waters is a national group that has staged outings for vets on Maine rivers in past years. A group of six veterans recently spent some time in one of the state’s legendary fly-fishing villages: Grand Lake Stream.

Jeff McEvoy, the owner of Weatherby’s Resort in Grand Lake Stream, reported two of the veterans spent time fly fishing the stream while four others spent two days fishing Big Lake out of Grand Laker canoes.   read more……..

Memorial Weekend

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I spent the weekend guiding Alec, Ed, and Frank. They did really well for high winds, fluctuating water and a hook in the hand.

Changing Planes
by Kathy Scott

Photobucket

I must admit, I tend to be drawn more towards books based in fiction, however, as I started reading Kathy Scott’s CHANGING PLANES, I was pleasantly surprised.

Even though this book is about Kathy building her first bamboo fly rod, I think it is much more than that. I found it to be about the basics of life and how we really need to enjoy and appreciate the every day routines that we find ourselves in.

Kathy’s writing draws you into her daily routine. Each night I looked forward to seeing what she and David and the dogs would be up to. Her writing made her every day routine fun. I found myself on her nightly walks around the pond. You could almost hear the frogs on the pond as she and her dogs explored each cove. I could even feel the pain of her tragedy in one section.

I met Kathy and David several years ago at a TU meeting and they were some of the nicest people I had every met. It was right when her fist book came out, Moose in the Water. After reading this book, I am going to go dig out her fist one, now that I know what I missed.

This a great read and an easy one. I highly recommend you pick one up. You can pick one up here:  Alder Creek Publishing

New to the sport

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

This has been a great week, I had the pleasure of teaching two new guys to fly fish. These are picture of Lou with a couple of fish he caught on the fly. We spent over three hours casting and land crappie. We worked on casting techniques and ways to set and land fish.

Another one goes down

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

John hired me to teach him to fly fish. We went out for a half day. I spent time going over knots, rods, fly, two types of cast and presentation. He picked it up pretty quick and will be throwing away all his spinning rods. He caught crappie after crappie and landed a few pickerel.
